Sheet Music of Vaughan Williams Ralph

Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958)

Sheet Music and Program Notes

Ralph Vaughan Williams was an English Composer.  He studied composition under Maurice Ravel.  Among his most popular works are The Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, and the Lark Ascending.  He was friends with Gustav Holst. It is also interesting to note Charles Darwin was his great uncle.

Vaughan Williams discoverd in 1904 that English fold songs and carols were fast becoming extinct because the oral tradition through which they existed was being undermined by an increase in literacy and the availability of printed music.  He was fascinated by the beauty of the music and its' anonymous history in the working lives of ordinary people.  He traveld the countryside transcribing and preserving much of this music.
