Based on DuBose Heyward’s novel Porgy and composed between 1934 and 1935—during which Gershwin lived on Folly Island, South Carolina, to immerse himself in Gullah folk culture—this monumental American folk opera premiered on September 30, 1935, in Boston before opening on Broadway, seamlessly integrating operatic recitative and leitmotifs with blues and spirituals through beloved classics such as "Summertime," "Bess, You Is My Woman Now," and "It Ain't Necessarily So."
