Wagner: Overture to Tannhauser

Overture to Tannhäuser (1845)

Richard Wagner (1813-1883)

Few composers command the stage like Richard Wagner, and few of his works lay out a drama as completely and thrillingly as the Overture to his opera Tannhäuser. More than a simple medley of tunes to come, this overture is a self-contained symphonic poem, a fourteen-minute psychological battle that tells the entire story of the opera before a single curtain has risen. In it, Wagner pits two of the most powerful forces in human experience against each other: sacred and profane love.
