Little Suite by Ken Cooper, Strings Level 1, first concert piece.

First Concert Piece.

  * first movement (Little Dance) uses only open strings with piano accompaniment.
  * second movement (Boogie) uses first finger and open strings with piano accompaniment
   * third movement (up and Down Stairs) uses 2 fingers and open strings.

Students enjoy playing this work and have a huge sound that really surprises parents when used on concert with piano accompaniment.  It is a great first piece where students learn to play in multiple parts and reinforces good bow useage.

This charming three-movement work is a foundational piece in the repertoire for beginning string orchestra.

The work’s pedagogical brilliance lies in its clever limitations, ensuring that students can focus entirely on tone production, rhythmic security, and ensemble listening. . Cooper understands that a first concert experience must be successful and musically rewarding; his suite delivers this by offering beautiful musical phrasing and a rich texture provided by the optional, but highly effective, piano accompaniment. . The two earliest movements are particularly famous for their strategic use of only open strings and the first finger, allowing students to step onto the stage with confidence and pride. . While simple in execution, the music is elegant, rhythmic, and perfectly suited to showcase the initial accomplishments of young string musicians.
