Tonight, we continue our journey with Bizet's L'Arlésienne Suite No. 2, a posthumously compiled collection of some of the most charming and atmospheric music from his incidental score to Alphonse Daudet's play.
The Enduring Legacy of a Tragic Play
As we discussed with Suite No. 1, Bizet composed the music for Daudet's play, L'Arlésienne (The Woman of Arles), in 1872. While the play itself, a poignant tale of unrequited love and despair set in Provence, struggled to find an audience, Bizet's accompanying music was an undeniable triumph. It proved so popular that Bizet himself quickly arranged the first suite for concert performance.
Following Bizet's tragically early death in 1875, his friend and fellow composer, Ernest Guiraud (who also helped assemble the Carmen suites), recognized that many more gems lay hidden within the full L'Arlésienne score. Guiraud took it upon himself to compile a second suite, published in 1879, ensuring that more of this exquisite music would reach the concert stage.
