The Anna Magdalena Notebook is a collection of keyboard music compiled by Johann Sebastian Bach for his second wife, Anna Magdalena. The notebook contains a wide variety of pieces, including dances, minuets, sarabandes, and preludes. The music is written in a Baroque style, and it is characterized by its simple melodies, lush harmonies, and expressive rhythms.
The Anna Magdalena Notebook is a valuable source of information about Baroque keyboard music. It provides a glimpse into the musical life of Bach's household, and it offers a valuable resource for students and performers of Baroque keyboard music.
The notebook was compiled in
...There are two surviving notebooks, dated 1722 and 1725. They are filled with a delightful variety of short pieces: charming minuets, proud marches, elegant polonaises, heartfelt arias, and simple chorales. It was a practical volume, used for keyboard practice for their children (several of whom became renowned composers), for sight-singing, and for musical entertainment in the home.
The music within was not all penned by the great patriarch himself. The notebooks contain works by other popular composers of the day, such as François Couperin, as well as early compositions by Bach's own sons, including Carl Philipp Emanuel (C.P.E.) Bach. It was a living document, reflecting the family’s tastes, their studies, and their shared love of music.
For centuries, every piece in the notebook was attributed to J.S. Bach. However, modern scholarship has revealed the true authorship of several key works. The most famous example is the beloved Minuet in G major (BWV Anh. 114), a piece that has served as the starting point for countless piano students around the world. Research has now established that this piece, and its companion Minuet in G minor, were actually composed by a lesser-known organist named Christian Petzold.
This discovery doesn’t diminish the collection's value; rather, it enriches it. It shows us what music the Bach family themselves enjoyed and considered worthy of study. Listening to these selections, we are not just hearing simple exercises, but are being invited into the Bach family music room, witnessing the charming, everyday foundation upon which a towering musical legacy was built.
